Roman sarcophagus fountains
The historic centre of Rovio has no fewer than 6 fountains made from ancient Roman sarcophagi.
It is known that the Romans lived in Ticino, and they probably settled in Val Mara. In the 19th century the people of Rovio made fountains out of the Roman sarcophagi that were plentiful in the area. The sarcophagi date from the 4th–5th century AD and were turned into fountains in the 1800s.
