Generoso caves
Monte Generoso has many caves, in the territories of Mendrisio, Val Mara and Arogno and also on the Italian side, in the municipalities of the Intelvi valley.
The most famous and important is certainly the Bear Cave, just below the summit on the lower Generoso trail (15), which is open to the public.
Another well-known cave is the Sovaglia hole, or “Böcc” della Sovaglia, which extends for about 500 metres with a difference in height of 61 metres. The cave is flooded and can therefore only be explored by cave divers, and only during periods of drought.
Smaller caves, still important for the human remains they have yielded from as early as the Bronze Age, open up all along the slopes of the Generoso, from the foot to the summit.
Some are open and can be visited; others, such as the Veri cave and the Canalone cave, are closed because they are dangerous or of scientific interest.
